Root Canal Q & A

What is a root canal?

When you think of a root canal, you may conjure up images of long and painful procedures at the dentist’s office. However, this is often not the case. Root canal therapy procedures are sometimes very necessary and important procedures that help to save a damaged or diseased tooth.

During a root canal procedure, the interior portion of the tooth that houses the pulp and tooth nerve is removed and cleaned out. The tooth is then sealed permanently in order to protect this inner portion and regain strength and function.

While this may sound like it could damage the tooth, the interior nerve and pulp are not necessary for the tooth’s functioning after it has fully grown in.

What can I expect during my procedure?

The team at Goldstein & Freud, DDS, PLLC, will first take an X-ray of your mouth in order to assess the situation and create an individualized care plan. During the actual root canal procedure, they will use local anesthesia to ensure that you do not feel any pain during the procedure.

Your physician will then use a special drill to clear out the middle portion of your tooth and clean out any remaining debris. Once the root and pulp has been cleared away, they will seal up the tooth

Depending on your situation, they may prefer to wait for up to one week before sealing the tooth in order to help clear any infection. During this period, your tooth will be temporarily sealed.

What can I expect after my procedure?

Contrary to popular belief, most people report that root canals are not very painful. The team at Goldstein & Freud, DDS, PLLC, also specializes in painless root canal therapy, allowing you to get all the benefits of a root canal without any pain.

In the days following the root canal, you may notice some tooth sensitivity. This is natural, and can usually be effectively managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
